recad is a CAD tool for designing parts to 3D-print. This page describes exactly what it stores and why. It is written to be accurate rather than exhaustive — if something here is unclear, ask and it will be fixed.

What is collected

Your email address, so you can sign in and so your designs can be returned to you. If you sign in with Google, Google tells us your email address and basic profile (name and picture) and nothing else.
The designs you make. Each is stored as the plain data the editor works from, tied to your account.
A small preview image of each design, so the dashboard has something to show. It is stored with the same protection as the design itself.
Feedback you send using the in-app widget: your message and category, your browser's user-agent string, the app version, and — so a bug can actually be reproduced — a copy of the design you had open at the time. If you would rather not send the design, say so in the message and it will be deleted.

Your designs are private to your account, and that is enforced by the database itself — not by the app remembering to check. Every read and write is filtered by who you are signed in as, so a bug in the interface cannot show you someone else's work. Previews are protected the same way as the designs they depict.

Usage measurement

recad uses Google Analytics to count how the tool is used — roughly how many people visit, and whether they get as far as drawing a shape or exporting a file. During a beta that is the difference between fixing what is actually broken and guessing. Google sets cookies to recognise a returning browser, and receives your approximate location (from your IP address), device and browser type, and pages viewed.

Alongside page views, exactly four things are recorded, and this is the entire list:

a design was created;
a shape was added — which kind (rectangle, circle, cone…), nothing more;
a file was exported — the format, and how many parts;
feedback was sent — which category button was pressed.

Session replay

recad also uses Hotjar (Contentsquare) to replay how the interface is used — where people click, what they open, where they hesitate. During a beta this is how we find the places the tool confuses people, which no counter can show. A replay records the interface: menus, panels, buttons and the cursor's path.

The 3D view is not captured. Replays are rebuilt from the page structure, and the model area is a drawing canvas that this kind of recording cannot see — it shows as a blank region. Text you type into fields is masked by the tool by default. Be aware that text shown by the interface — a design's name, the dimensions in the panel — can appear in a replay; if that is not acceptable to you, any tracker blocker stops it entirely and the app works exactly the same.

Nothing from your designs is ever sent to Google. Not names, not dimensions, not shapes, not file names, not anything you typed. The list above is the complete set of events and they carry no content from your work. Advertising features are switched off, so no advertising profile is built from your use of recad and nothing is shared with Google's ad products.

What is not collected

No advertising, no tracking pixels, and no third-party scripts beyond the two named above.
No payment details — there is nothing to pay for.
Nothing is sold or shared for marketing, ever.

Stored on your own device

The browser keeps a local copy of your current design (so a crash or a closed tab does not lose work), plus small preferences: grid size, units, panel width, and which panel sections you have folded. Clearing your browser storage clears all of it.

Who else handles it

Clerk — sign-in. They handle your email address and sign-in codes.
Neon — the database your designs and previews are stored in.
Netlify — serves the app itself.
Google — Analytics, as described above, and sign-in if you choose to use it.
Hotjar (Contentsquare) — session replay, as described above.

Those are the only five. No other service receives your data.

You can opt out of Analytics entirely with Google's browser opt-out add-on, or by using any ad or tracker blocker — recad works exactly the same either way, and blocking it breaks nothing.

Deleting things

You can delete any design from the dashboard, which removes it and its preview. To delete your account and everything attached to it, email the address below and it will be done — no dark patterns, no retention period to wait out. Export any design first from Export in the toolbar, or File → Save a copy for the editable file.

Beta

recad is in active development and your designs are real work. Keep your own copies of anything you care about. Backups exist, but the honest position during a beta is that you should not rely on this as the only place your work lives.
